How to Rally

Back and forth, until someone faults.

Four players in a fast doubles rally at the net

What is a Rally?

A rally is the back-and-forth that starts with the serve and keeps going until someone faults (makes a mistake that ends it — page 8 lists them).

Your job in a rally is simple to say and fun to learn: keep the ball in play, send it over the net, and respect the kitchen until the ball bounces. Long rallies are where pickleball shines — patience beats power.

Rally Basics

  • 1Keep the ball in play — don't rush the finish
  • 2Hit it over the net and inside the lines
  • 3Avoid the kitchen volley — let close balls bounce

Quick Facts

  • ✓A rally ends when: Someone faults
  • ✓Shots per rally: As many as it takes
  • ✓The golden rule: In the kitchen, let it bounce
