At Tweeds Head, Selina Turulja won singles, mixed doubles, and women's doubles at one event — the first Triple Crown ever on the PPA Australia tour. Brian Tran took his first singles gold too.

History was made at Tweeds Head, just south of the Gold Coast in New South Wales. Selina Turulja won the women's singles, the mixed doubles, and the women's doubles at the PPA Australia tour stop — the first Triple Crown in the tour's history, in a recap published today by Todd Boss's pro pickleball coverage.

The event was the Australian tour's third of the year and a 250-level stop, worth double the points of its regular events. With many of the tour's Asia- and Australia-based PPA players in the United States for the Atlanta Slam, the draws were almost entirely Australian — and Turulja owned them.

How the three titles fell

In singles, No. 3 seed Turulja beat No. 2 seed Kaitlynn Hart and then top seed Andie Dikosavljevic to claim her first singles gold on tour. In mixed doubles, she and Joseph Wild won as the No. 2 seeds, topping Sarah Burr and Zachary Grabovic in the final. And in women's doubles, top seeds Turulja and Sarah Burr were pushed to a third game by No. 3 seeds Talia Sanders and Bernadette Massih before closing it out 11-8 in the third.

A first gold for Brian Tran, too

The men's singles draw produced its own breakthrough: No. 6 seed Brian Tran beat the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 seeds on his way to his first PPA international title. Top seed Mitchell Hargreaves was upset in the semifinals but rallied for bronze — and Hargreaves still left with gold, winning men's doubles alongside Joseph Wild.

Winning three events in one weekend is a fitness test as much as a skill test — singles alone covers the whole court, as our guide to how to play pickleball singles explains. Turulja passed all three in the same few days.

Pickleball words, in plain English

Players throw these words around like everyone knows them. Here is what each one actually means.

Kitchen
The 7-foot zone right at the net. You can stand in it, but you can't hit the ball out of the air while you're there.
Dink
A soft, gentle shot that just clears the net and lands in the kitchen. It forces the other side to hit up, not down.
Third-shot drop
Your team's first shot after the serve and return. Hit it soft so it drops into the kitchen — that lets you walk up to the net.
Reset
When a hard shot comes at you, you block it softly into the kitchen instead of swinging back. It slows the point down and saves you.
Drive
A hard, fast shot hit low over the net. The opposite of a dink.
Pop-up
A ball you hit too high by accident. It hangs in the air, and the other side gets to smash it. Most points at low levels end this way.
Speed up
To suddenly hit the ball hard and fast on purpose, to rush the other side before they're ready.
Volley
Hitting the ball out of the air before it bounces.
