Quarterfinal Friday at the Opendoor Pickleball World Championships set the singles semifinals in Farmers Branch, Texas. As of 5:19 PM CT on Friday, November 6, the official United Pickleball Worlds live board marked 15 pro quarterfinals final, as tracked by DropThePickle — and the men's singles draw produced a clean sweep of straight-game wins.

Jack Sock beat Roscoe Bellamy 11-8, 11-7. John Lucian Goins beat Christopher Haworth 11-5, 11-5. Christian Alshon beat Jaume Martinez Vich 11-5, 11-9. And Hunter Johnson beat Hong Kit Wong 11-3, 11-6. Those four winners make up the men's singles semifinal lineup, with no deciding game needed in any of the four matches.

Women's singles: one comeback in a day of routs

Three of the four women's singles quarterfinals were one-sided. Anna Leigh Waters defeated Sofia Sewing 11-2, 11-8, and Kate Fahey defeated Catherine Parenteau 11-3, 11-0. Brooke Buckner defeated Rika Fujiwara 13-11, 11-4 after a tight first game.

The exception was Kaitlyn Christian's win over Jorja Johnson. Christian dropped the first game, then came back to win 11-13, 12-10, 11-7 — the only singles quarterfinal, men's or women's, that went to a third game on the board at the time of the snapshot.

Mixed doubles and the first doubles results

Mixed doubles also finished its quarterfinal round on the board. Anna Bright and Hayden Patriquin defeated Parris Todd and Andrei Daescu 11-2, 11-3. Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters defeated Sahra Dennehy and Tama Shimabukuro 11-5, 11-0. Jorja Johnson and JW Johnson defeated Catherine Parenteau and Eric Oncins 11-5, 11-2. And Rachel Rohrabacher and Christian Alshon defeated Tyra Black and Gabriel Tardio 11-4, 11-7.

In gender doubles, one result stood out: CJ Klinger and Eric Oncins defeated Federico Staksrud and Hayden Patriquin 11-8, 11-4 in men's doubles. In women's doubles, Anna Bright and Anna Leigh Waters defeated Chao Yi Wang and Layne Sleeth 11-1, 11-4, and Kate Fahey and Tina Pisnik defeated Mari Humberg and Milan Rane 12-10, 11-9.

One honest note on timing: this was a snapshot, not the full day. Five gender-doubles quarterfinals were still unresolved when the board was checked at 5:19 PM CT — two live and three up next — so the complete doubles semifinal picture finished later than this report. What is final is final: the singles semifinals are set, the mixed doubles semifinals are set, and Waters is still alive in every event she entered. Pickleball words, in plain English

Players throw these words around like everyone knows them. Here is what each one actually means.

Kitchen
The 7-foot zone right at the net. You can stand in it, but you can't hit the ball out of the air while you're there.
Dink
A soft, gentle shot that just clears the net and lands in the kitchen. It forces the other side to hit up, not down.
Third-shot drop
Your team's first shot after the serve and return. Hit it soft so it drops into the kitchen — that lets you walk up to the net.
Reset
When a hard shot comes at you, you block it softly into the kitchen instead of swinging back. It slows the point down and saves you.
Drive
A hard, fast shot hit low over the net. The opposite of a dink.
Pop-up
A ball you hit too high by accident. It hangs in the air, and the other side gets to smash it. Most points at low levels end this way.
Speed up
To suddenly hit the ball hard and fast on purpose, to rush the other side before they're ready.
Volley
Hitting the ball out of the air before it bounces.
